Drug dealers often rob each other for their supply,which results in breaking and entering charges, burglary charges, and sometimes even murder charges. Addicts tend to steal and rob to support their habit and usually get caught and arrested for these crimes. Drug addicts will rob stores, strangers in the street, even family members to get money for their drugs. That is not the only crimes addict commit. While under the influence of drugs some people commit acts they normally would not do, such as killing, stealing, or driving which could result in people getting hurt. They get high and do things without thinking. With all these problems in the urban communities, it becomes difficult to sell property at its book value. It becomes an undesirable place to live. People who are looking for reasonable priced housing get discouraged because of the environment that surrounds these houses. Nobody wants to live in these areas with all the drug related crimes and drug activities that go on. These issues cause the property values to go down in urban communities. Below is a bar graph to show the difference in property values between urban communities and suburban communities. I think if the public paid more attention or cared a little more about the drug related problems that are over powering our urban communities, these communities can be taken back from the criminals that have run them down so bad that they are so obsolete in the government’s eyes. Pursuit of higher education is attractive to many individuals especially where it leads to high salary. This is because organizations have a propensity to prefer highly trained employees in order to enhance their human resource portfolio and have a competitive edge over other organizations. According to the Economist (2014), salaries of MBA holders have recently been a center of attention for the media. Rydzewski and Eastman note that the major attributes of selecting an online MBA program for post graduate students is certification of the program, flexibility and quality services. When making a choice of the university to enroll in, applicants want to be certain that the school is accredited by the relevant authorities; the study hours can fit into their schedules and that the services offered are worthwhile in terms of quality and time. They postulated that the cost and t he type of program offered are vital characteristics and demographics, gender, income level and age contribute to choice of an MBA program. According to Fortuna (n.d), an MBA an acronym of masters of business administration is a post-graduate degree offered at many universities around the world. Available in universities both small and prestigious, MBAs are often achieved in around five to seven total years of college and have been offered since the degree was first introduced at Dartmouth in 1900. Individuals are offered a chance to study while still in employment through studying part-time courses. Most MBA programs are offered on part-time basis to cater for employed individuals who would like to advance their careers in an effort to gain promotions in their workplace and or look for better paying jobs. Most employers support MBA programs for their employees by funding the programs. Jones (2003) contends that Master of Business Administration (MBA) provides an opportunity for students to work and at the same time study. This kind of MBA program is preferred by most universities and has attracted many working class individuals to enroll in MBA programs. According to Jones, the average period taken to complete an MBA for part time students is less than three years. He further concludes that is one of the major reasons why employers offer scholarships to MBA students due to the flexibility of time required to be in school does not affect working hours. Some MBA programs are tailor made for corporate executives by arranging the lessons after working hours and weekends. He further concluded that in the United Kingdom between 10,000 and 15,000 individuals enroll in MBA e-learning programs annually. According to Enwistle (2003), the motivation of students plays a key role on how they eventually perform in their studies. He suggested that there is a correlation between the satisfaction level of students and their what they expect to achieve after their studies. The expectation of students has various elements in determining the relationship between motivation and expectations. This elements are broadly divided into inherent and external motivational factors. Jensen (2010) inferred that there is variation between remuneration for students who have studied in a private school and those who have studied in a public school in the US. Green et al. (2011) found similar results in his study in the United Kingdom. Several studies on the impact of salary packages to be associated with pursuit of higher learning. Walker and Zhu (2011) investigated the association between the variation of salaries based on the discipline in learning and also the final grading of undergraduate studies. They also sought to determine salary scale of an individual was associated with the propensity to seek postgraduate studies. Arbaugh(2010) investigated the departmental attributes and demeanors in forty-six MBAcourses carried out in a two-year duration. His results revealed that the prescribed lecturer activities indicated in most online courses as teaching aids, the unofficial activities based on propinquity demeanors had a positive correlation with students perception of learning and their level of satisfaction with the learning system. The study also established that the frequency of lecturers to login to their school accounts and the amount of time spent per login period had a negative correlation with perception of students to learn. He concluded that there is need for online lecturers to systematically structure and categorize the courses earlier so that they can effectively and efficiently cater for the students while in an online learning session. Endres, Chowdhury, Frye, and Hurtubis (2009) identified course curriculum as a feature of making a choice of various MBA programs. They attributed this phenomena as the fact that individuals want to feel that they are satisfied in their pursuit of intended goals. They suggested that level of satisfaction with course curriculum is based on the program rigidity, equality, and communications with the instructor or fellow students. The characteristics associated with level of satisfaction students derive from an MBA program are technological quality, positive attitude of the instructors who are consistently engaged in students progress. These characteristics positively motivate students to take up online MBA courses that fit into their needs and time (Endres et al., 2009). This report therefore sought to investigate the various aspects associated with the claims that enrolling in an MBA program is commensurate with earning a bigger salary. This paper was based on data collected from a su rvey of students from class of 2012 of The University of Western Ontario. Various tests were carried out based on the concerns raised by Marie Daer, an aspiring MBA applicant. Association between Age and Starting Salary It has been held that the age of an individual is likely to impact on the starting salary upon employment. This report sought to investigate whether age was likely to have any association with the remuneration package individuals based on the sampled data and if so was it significant to make inference to the population. This was done by determining whether there was a linear relationship between age and starting salary. If at all there existed a linear relationship was the strength of the relationship strong enough? The variables used for this test were age as the independent variable (IV) and starting salary as the dependent variable (DV). Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to carry out the statistical tests throughout this report. Table 1: Descriptive Statistics of Age and Starting Salary According to table 1 above the mean starting salary was 39,025.69 associated with a standard deviation of 50,951.56. The Average age of the students of the class of 2012 was 27.36 years. The correlation matrix as shown in table 2 below revealed a negative weak correlation (-0.063, n = 274) between age and starting salary. This meant that the older an individual the less the starting salary. Table 2: Correlation Matrix of the Association between Age and Starting Salary The coefficient of determination to determine the degree of association between the IV and the DV was very weak at .004 (0.4%) meaning there was very little relationship or change in starting salary that can be explained by an individuals age as shown in table 3 below. Table 3: Coefficient of Determination of Age and Starting Salary Table 4 below shows an F statistic at one degree of freedom that was associated with a p value of p = 0.302. The hypothesis decision was to fail to reject the null hypothesis and concluded that there was statistical evidence to support the claim that age was associated with starting salary. Association between Gender and Salary The researcher sought to determine whether gender was likely to impact on an individuals starting salary. To establish this t test was used. This kind of statistical test was used since the independent variable (IV) age was a category type of measurement with only two groups while the dependent variable (DV) starting salary was a continuous type of measurement. However, various assumptions were made namely that the sample was normally distributed, the sample was randomly selected from the population, there were no outliers and that variations were roughly equal across the two groups that is male and female. The bivariate descriptive statistics of starting salary between males and females indicated that on average females had a higher starting salary of 45,121.07 compared with males mean salary of 37,013.62 as shown in table 4 below. The question therefore was whether this variation was brought about by a statistical error of chance or was significant enough to form a basis of conclus ion that starting salary differs based on gender. The null hypothesis therefore was that there was no difference in starting salary based on gender. Table 4: Bivariate Analysis of Starting Salary between Genders According to the results of the t-test the p value of the Levenes test for equality of variances was 0.619 which was more than .05. This meant that that we had not violated the assumption of homogeneity of variances as shown in table 5 below. Findings of the test revealed a test statistic of -1.138 at 272 degrees of freedom that was associated with a p value of 0.256. The hypothesis decision therefore was to fail to reject the null hypothesis. In this regard, the conclusion made is that there was no statistical evidence to infer that starting salary had any relationship with gender (t = -1.138, df = 272, p = 0.256). Table 5: Independent Sample T test for Gender and Starting Salary Whether total GMAT is Associated with overall GMAT percentile (marks) There was a concern from the applicant to determine whether GMAT score made a difference in the final marks in the school. To determine this, the variables used were the total GMAT and the overall GMAT percentile. The test statistic appropriate for this was the paired sample t test. Table 6 below revealed that the sampled participants had an average total GMAT score of 619.45 (standard deviation= 57.54) while the overall GMAT percentile was 84.2 (standard deviation= 14.02, n= 274). The concern however, was to determine whether the differences in the means between the two variables were associated. Put another way, was there any reason to suggest the total GMAT had an effect on the final marks (overall GMAT percentile) achieved by the students? The null hypothesis was that there were no differences between the means of total GMAT score and overall GMAT percentile. Table 6: Descriptive Statistics of Total GMAT and Overall Percentile The results revealed a strong positive correlation of .848 (84.8%) between total GMAT score and overall GMAT percentile as shown in table 7 below. The question was whether the association between total GMAT and overall GMAT percentile obtained from the sample data was significant to make inference to the entire population. Table 7: Correlation Matrix for total GMAT Score and Overall GMAT Percentile The findings revealed a test statistic of 191.56 at 273 degrees that was associated with a p value of p 0.01. The hypothesis decision was therefore to reject the null hypothesis and thereby conclude that there was in fact evidence to suggest that total GMAT was associated with the overall GMAT percentile as shown in table 8 below. Table 8: Paired Sample T Test between total GMAT Score and Overall GMAT Percentile Whether Students Liked the MBA Program To determine whether past students in the school liked the MBA program offered, the degree of satisfaction variable was used. This was a ranked scale of one through ten where one represented low satisfaction and ten represented the highest satisfaction. However, those participants who did not answer the survey and those who answered but did not disclose salary data were excluded from the analysis since such data would have given unreliable results. The data was first analyzed descriptively by determining the mean and standard deviation as well as the minimum and maximum scores as shown in table 9 below. Table 9: Descripive Statistics of Degree of Satisfaction with MBA Program According to the results above, the maximum score on the degree of satisfaction with MBA program from the sample was seven while the minimum was one. The average score was 5.57 associated with a standard deviation of 0.98. This initial analysis revealed that based on the sampled data, the level of satisfaction with the MBA program was slightly above average. However, it was important to determine whether such a score could be expected in the entire population. In this regard, it was hypothesized that the mean score on level of satisfaction with the MBA program is not different from that of the population. A one sample t test was used to perform the analysis. Table 10: One Sample T test for degree of Satisfaction with MBA Program The one sample t test on degree of satisfaction with MBA program revealed a test statistic of 85.76 at 227 degrees of freedom that was associated a p value of p 01. The test value was set at zero since under the null hypothesis, there was expected to be no difference between the observed mean and the mean of the population. Since the p value was less than .01 the decision was to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there was evidence to suggest that the mean degree of satisfaction was different from that of the sample. The confidence interval also revealed that we can be 95% confident that the degree of satisfaction with MBA program will fall between 5.44 and 5.69 based on our sample of 221. Relationship between Language and GMAT There was concern as to whether an individual whose first language was not English meant that his or her GMAT score could be low compared to those whose first language was English. To test this variation, first language variable as the independent variable (IV) and total GMAT score as the dependent variable (DV) were used using the independent sample t test. Table 11: Descriptive Statistics for Language and total GMAT score The descriptive statistics of the total GMAT score based on language revealed a higher GMAT for students with English as their first language with a mean score of 622.27 (standard deviation= 56.61) compared with students with another language as their first language at 598.13 (standard deviation= 60.88). This initial analysis revealed a variation that seemed to suggest that students with English as their first language were likely to perform better in GMAT than those with another language as their first language. The significance of this variation was therefore sought to identify whether the variation could be expected in the entire population or not. The null hypothesis was there is no variation in the total GMAT score based on language. Table 12: Independent Sample T Test of Total GMAT Based On Language It was assumed that the sample was randomized and the Levenes test for equality of variances was 0.069, which was more than .05. This meant that the assumption of equality of variances had been met. The findings revealed a test statistic of 2.248 that was associated with a p value of p = 0.025 that was less than the alpha level of .05. The hypothesis decision therefore was to reject the null hypothesis. It was concluded that language formed a basis of determining the total GMAT of students. Conclusions According to the results in this report, the correlation between age of the participants and their starting salary revealed a weak negative correlation of -0.063. This meant that the older a student was the less starting salary he or she would expect. This relationship, though significant was very weak based on the correlation coefficient and a very weak coefficient of determination. In terms of gender, there was no statistically significant evidence to suggest that gender was associated with starting salary. The overall GMAT percentile from the sample was 84.2 percent. This meant that out of the sampled data, the overall mean GMAT score of 169.45 was in the 84th percentile. Put another way, the sampled students tested better than 83 percent of those who took the test. The results revealed a positive correlation of 0.848 (84.8%) between total GMAT and GMAT percentile. This correlation was statistically significant (t= 191.56, df = 273, p .01). The degree of satisfaction with MBA program on average was 5.57 with a standard deviation of 0.98. This result revealed that the MBA program was satisfactory. There was sufficient evidence to conclude that at 95% confidence level, it would be expected the mean level of satisfaction with the schools MBA program would be between 5.44 and 5.69. Students with English as their first language got a higher mean total GMAT score of 622.27 compared to those with English as a second language who got 598.13. This variation of mean total GMAT score based on language was found to be statistically significant (t= 2.25, df= 272, p= 0.025). Recommendations This report recommended that joining the MBA program for the university under review would be beneficial since the overall percentile of the students is ranked high. Stephane Mallarme Essays - Symbolist Poets, Prince Des Potes

Stephane Mallarme St?phane Mallarm?, a French poet, became one of the most important masters of French symbolism, a nineteenth-century movement in poetry that stressed impressions and moods rather than descriptions of reality (Online). The poetry of Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine, and others strongly affected Mallarm?'s writing (Online). He used symbolism to represent human emotions to make his poems unclear, thus avoiding direct communication with his readers (Online & World Book 110,111). Mallarm? was born in Paris on March 18, 1842 (Online). After his mother died when he was seven years old, his grandmother became his parental role model. His education included upper-class boarding schools where he often felt out of place because of his middle class background. When he was fifteen, the death of his younger sister, Maria, greatly influenced his poetic development. He turned from Romantic lyricism to much more morbid subjects like Baudelaire's Les fleurs du mal. In 1860, he received his baccalaureate degree from a "lycee" in Sens. After an apprenticeship in the Registry's office, in 1862 he had his first sonnet published in Le papillon, a literary journal. In 1862 Mallarm? married Maria Gerhard and became a teacher in Tournon. The difficult duties of teaching often interrupted his poetic work and thoughts. Although his students made fun of him, Mallarm? was not discouraged and continued his writing. After translating Edgar Allan Poe's English poems into French, Mallarm?'s chief influence became Poe rather than Baudelaire. He began to compose long imaginative poems and a prose poem called Herodiade, the biblical story of Salome who caused John the Baptist's murder. Then he wrote his best-known poem L'Apr?s-midi d'un faune (Afternoon of a Faun), which explores the difference between reality and fantasy (World Book 110,111). After moving to Paris in 1875 and becoming a teacher at College Rollin, Mallarm? began to associate with such famous French poets as Theodore de Banville, Paul Verlaine, and Gustave Kahn (Online). These and others visited him on Tuesday evenings (les mardis), and these poets became known as les mardistes. Mallarm? spoke about using words as symbols and was considered an oracle. He became known as the "Master of Symbolism" because of the great effect he had on the poets of his age. To honor his colleagues, he later wrote Toast funebre and "Le tombeau d'Edgar Poe" ("The Tomb of Edgar Poe"), a poem telling of Poe's "eternal genius" despite his sad life. This poem is one of the most often quoted poems in French literature. In 1869, Mallarm? started but did not complete Igitur: ou, la folie d'Elbehnon, twelve prose fragments of different lengths (Online). Classified as a story, a prose poem, and a drama, Igitur did not appeal to feelings but to the intelligence of the reader. It shows his lifelong preoccupation with death, infinity, fantasy, and absence. Despite Mallarm?'s requests to dispose of his Igitur notes at his death, his son-in-law, Dr. Bonninot, tried to reorganize the prose fragments and published them in 1925. In his final work Un coup de des jamais n'abolira le hasard (A Throw of the Dice Never Will Abolish Chance), Mallarm? showed his interest in musical verse form and set his words in different typefaces to illustrate visually the subject of the poem and to stress the unity of thought and sound. Mallarm? thought that one should not change or paraphrase the language of a poem (Americana 143). He believed that sacred things are surrounded in mystery and that poetry has secrets that should be protected, just as religion does. According to Mallarm?, poetry is not like music because the latter cannot be understood by all. To this poet, the silences in a poem are just as important as the words. He also thought that the reason for writing poetry is the creation of poetic language; therefore, poetry itself is the subject of all poems. Although Mallarm? tried to develop a "Grand Oeuvre," he spent so much time and energy thinking about the true nature of poetry that he was unable to write this work (Online). He sometimes suffered from depression and lack of creativity due to his changing poetic intentions, his dislike for instant pleasure in literature, and his insistence that the reader himself search for the symbolic meaning in poetry. His most important contribution is to the Symbolist Movement and modern poetry, for it shows his feeling that what can not be explained in poetry is able to be understood through exact symbolic language. Behavior and performance of the individual INTRODUCTION A group is defined by Ivancevich et al (2008) as two or more individuals interacting with each other to accomplish a common goal. Groups are important aspect of work pattern of an organization (Mullins 2002) and a part of modern life (Ivancevich et al 2008). A group can be formal or informal (Armstrong 2009). Informal groups according to Newstrom (2007:277) Are established by the organization and have a public identity and goal to achieve while formal groups emerge on the sense of common interest, proximity and friendship. Informal groups are set up by the organization in other to achieve organizational goals while formal groups are set up by individuals for the purpose of satisfying the needs of its members (Armstrong 2009). The group used for the purpose of this study is the formal groups. This study will analyze the impact the group has on the individual, factors affecting the behavior of the individual, human relations theory and the factors affecting the behavior and performance of the individual in the group. IMPACT OF THE GROUP ON THE INDIVIDUAL The performance of a group depends on how well its members engage in communication with each other or interacts with each other and also on how the individual learns in the group (Mullins 2002). Mullins (2002:465) argues that how people behave and perform as members of a group is as important as their behavior or performance as individuals. Usually, lack of interaction between the individual and members of the group will have effect on the performance of the group as well as the individual in the group and result to lack of satisfaction for the individual (Mullins 2002). It is believed that the group generates better ideas than the individual does, by drawing resources from individual members of the group (brainstorming), the group thereby brings in more ideas and input into decision process than a single person can (Robbins 2001). In one of my experiences in a group I learnt that groups can be rewarding to the individual because an individual can actually learn from other members of the group. I joined a decoration group in my church and we were told to decorate the church for a program, we all had our ideas on how we want the decoration to look like but instead of pursuing personal goals we brought our ideas together and we came up with a better idea and I also learnt things I did not know before, also I found the experience challenging because I had to think beyond what I know in other to be able to contribute but at the end I left with more knowledge than I went in with. It is also believed; however, that group ideas can hinder creative thinking, in other words, individuals will ignore their idea in other to conform to the idea of the group (Mullins 2002). For example, as a member of a group of four in one of my classes in Salford University, we were asked to solve a particular question, we were different people with different beliefs, attitudes, perception, culture and behavior, however, three out of four were in agreement but one particular person in the group had a different idea from what the rest of us had and was trying so hard to convince us which was impossible because it was one against three, in other to avoid conflict the individual had to ignore the idea and agree with that of the group. Groups bind the individual and members of the group in togetherness and in other to be in togetherness, individuals have to see themselves as members of the group and not isolate themselves in other for them to achieve the goal of the group and also to meet their needs (Robbins 2001). Huczynski and Buchanan (2007) discussed the work of Tayfel and Tunner (1986) who argued that as long as individuals see themselves as more important than the group the group cannot function effectively. However, It is believed that individuals have different needs or reasons for joining or been in a group and it can be the need to fulfill social needs, achieve group goals or to derive greater economic benefits or for social security reasons, which is believed that groups can serve as a medium of meeting these needs of the individual (Ivancevich et al 2008) and in other to remain a member of the group and to meet these needs the individual must set aside their personal goal to achieve the groups goal ( N ewstrom 2007). FACTORS AFFECTING INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR There are different types of ways of explaining the behavior of the individual in a group; they are Perception, Attribution, Orientation, Role and branded rationality (Armstrong 2009). Perception is one way of explaining the behavior of an individual in a group. Perception according to Maund (2001: pg 444) is the process by which individuals interpret sensory impression so that they can assign meaning to it. Perception is when an individual gives meaning or interprets the things happening around them and people tend to perceive situation that satisfies needs, emotions, attitudes or their self concept (Ivancevich et al 2008). Members of a group can see the same thing or be in the same situation but their interpretation of the situation will be different from each other based on how they see it (Mullins 2007). Attribution according to Luthans (2002:197) refers to how people explains the cause of anothers or their behavior. Attribution can be the way people interpret the situation they are in (Armstrong 2009). Attribution can lead to conflict in a group because the way one person see things (perception) may not be the same way another sees the same thing (Armstrong 2009). While Orientation can be said to be an individuals attempt to make sense of life which can be different from that of the group (Armstrong 2009). Role is the part played by the individual in caring out their duties (Armstrong 2009). There is a particular role expected from the members of the group once they have lived to the expectation of the role then it is believed they have performed their role successfully and it is believed that this role shapes the individuals behavior (Armstrong 2009). While branded rationality can be said to be the ways individuals understands how complicated the situation they are in is and their reaction to the situation limits the way they behave rationally (Armstrong 2009). Huczynski and Buchanan (2005:279) discuss the work of Marion Hampton (1999)who argues that groups are seen as taking over the individuals mind, depressing intelligence, eliminating moral responsibility and forcing conformity, they can cause their members a great deal of suffering and despair and can perpetuate acts of cruelty. There are various factors affecting the individual in the group, But before explaining that we are going to analyze a theory that explains what effect a group has on the individual. HAWTHORNES THEORY (Human relations approach) The theory that explains the effect of groups on the individuals behavior and performance is the Hawthorne experiment of the human relations theory written by Elton Moyo (Mullins 2002). The experiment is called the bank wiring observation room experiment; the experiment was carried out on 14 men who were organized into three subgroups which contained three wires, a supervisor and an inspector that moved around the group (Moorhead and Griffin 1995). After the study there were two major findings; The level of interaction that was observed among the men showed the existence of informal groups within the three groups and, It was also revealed that these groups develop norms or rules that guides behavior and also set structures to enforce the rules (Moorhead and Griffin 1995) The hawthorns researcher found that the group established a level of output for its members (Mullins 2002). They found out that the group did not produce up to what they are capable of producing; they produced below their capability which had effect on their earning because their output was low(Moor head and Griffin 1995). The group produced a specific level of output for its members which are the only accepted level of production, in other to be accepted the individual has to slow down production when getting close to the accepted level of production in other not to over produce (Moorhead and Griffin 1995). Moorhead and Griffin (1995) discuss the work of Roethlisberger and Dickson (1939) who points out that The social organization of the bank wiremen performed a twofold function which is to protect the group from internal indiscretions and to protect the group from outside interference. Moorhead and Griffin (1995) also points out that almost all the activities carried out by the group can be said to be a means of controlling the behavior of its members. The research shows that peer pressure has more effect on the individual than things that may encourage the individual and forces of control or orders from management, individuals would rather do things required by the group than doing things that would encourage or reward their actions (Mullins 2002). This theory shows how working in a group can be both challenging an rewarding for the individuals which leads us to the factors affecting the performance and behavior of the individual in the group. FACTORS AFFECTING THE INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE IN THE GROUP Group norms Norms according to Greenberg and Baron (2008) can be defined as the generally agreed upon informal rules that guides the behavior of the members in a group. Norms influence group behavior and refer to what should be done and also represents value judgment and appropriate behavior in social situations (Psyblog 2010). Norms are of great importance to groups in controlling behavior and in measuring performance (Hanh 2007). Groups have norms that are set to guide members behavior (Greenberg and Baron 2008) and also to reduce ambiguity in terms of behavior that are of importance to the group (Rollinson 2005). Norms are set up in groups which the individual must conform with and groups have ways of making the individual conform to such norms (Rollinson 2005). Norms keeps the group functioning as a system instead of as a collection of individuals and members of the group come together to achieve a common goal instead of pursing individual groups (Hanh 2007). Groups do not set rules or norm for every situation but only set rules for situations that are of importance to the members of the group which could be in relation to their job or how they communicate with each other or with others outside the group (Hanh 2007). Group norms makes life predictable, individuals know what is expected of them, know their roles and how much time to spend in the execution of their job, know the values and beliefs and the image of the group, and subscribe to the norms of the group (Rollinson 2005). Norms are usually assessed to know if group members are interacting with each other which can be rewarding and which gives the individuals a sense of belonging (Heathfield 2010). Group members come together to develop the group norms which gives the individual a feeling of belonging, sense of identity and feelings of security because they were part of the making of the rules (Brooks 2005). Norms are believed to be of importance because some members may harm the project or the success of the group with their behavior or action unintentionally but if there is agreed upon framework of interaction, misunderstandings and negative conflicts in the group can be prevented (Heathfield 2010). However, group norms can have negative effect on the individual (Armstrong 2009). According to Psyblog (2010) who argues that groups rarely come up with great ideas because the individual in them are powerfully shaped by group norms and the rules of what people are and how they must behave it is believed that changes are hard to spot unless they are carefully measured, individuals deny their own beliefs, ideas and senses just to conform with the groups even if they are wrong (Psyblog 2010).it is believed that, Norms serves as a form of constraint to the individuals, it hinders them from thinking freely because they would not want to think outside the group norms or the groups way of doing things, individuals can not pursue their personal goal, can not see things from their point of view because it might clash with the goals of the group (Psyblog 2010). Social Support Social support according to Dalgard (2009) is receiving help from other people when in need of help. An individual can receive support among groups of people who have a similar problem to what they have and in their relationship with others be it their family or friends (Curtis 2009). Curtis (2009) argues that if you have a support network you will not feel as alone; you will learn new ways to deal with your problem and may try harder to overcome it. Group members can serve as as a source of support, advice and encouragement to an individual facing any difficulty and also the individual can be a source of support to the group (Curtis 2009). Individuals in a group can benefit from the members of the group while members who are not part of the group cannot enjoy such benefits, having friends to talk with, to gain insight from, to listen to during times of need or borrow money from, all this are forms of support (Scott 2007). Social support makes the individual safe and gives them a feeling of being loved and cared for (Rollinson 2005). In one of my experience when I was writing my final dissertation for my bachelor degree, I wrote on the societal support for the elderly people in my community and I had the privilege working with the elderly people in that community and I found out that most of them lack social support from their family and friends, in other to feel loved, feel secure or have a feeling that they belong they had to join a group with the believe that the group would be able to meet their needs. Peer Pressure Peer pressure is another factor that has effect on the behavior of the individual in the group. Peer pressure is when other people impose pressure on a person (Nemours 2010). Peers have influence over others, by listening to other people a person learns from them and they also learn from the individual (Nemours 2010). Some individuals usually join groups in other to fit in, so in other to fit in the individual goes along with the idea of the group and sets aside their idea and go along with the groups idea to avoid being bullied by the other members of the group (Nemours 2010). However, peer pressure can have a positive impact on the individual because it can push the individual into doing the things they have no courage of doing or talking the individual out of doing things thats not in their best interest (Wilmer 2010). Individual Accountability Individual accountability can be defined as an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for ones action (McDaniel 2007). Individual accountability is a foundational component as it evaluates an individual core competence, strength and weaknesses (McDaniel 2007). Its the individual taking responsibility for their action in carrying out their duty or them being accountable for their duties (McDaniel 2007). The individual must be accountable for achieving its goal and for its contribution to the group, individual accountability occurs when performance is assessed and the result are given back to the group and the individual in other to ascertain who needs more support, encouragement and assistance (Cooperate learning center 2009). Accountability is not to punish mistake or to generate immediate result but to ensure the individual gives all their best in the achievement of goals and behaving responsible to one another (Luthans 2002). By empowering them over job pe rformance and then holding them accountable for the outcomes (Newstrom 2007). Conflict Rollinson (2005:401) defines conflict as the behavior of an individual or a group when purposely sets to block or inhibit another group or individual from achieving its goals. Competition is one of the main causes of conflict in a group, when the members of a group are in competition against each other it can lead to conflicting interest (Rollonson 2005). Some groups encourage competition because they believe that when members of the group compete against each other it will result to successful performance or quick performance but mostly it might lead to conflict (Rollinson 2005). However, Vodosek (2007) argues that Researchers have noted that high level of task conflict can lead to reduced member satisfaction and commitment to the group Individual have different interest, skills, personality and attributes which may act as cohesion or a clash in the group (Brooks 2009). Some individuals tend to work towards achieving personal goals by doing so they tend to ignore the goals of the group and focus more on achieving their personal goals which might lead to conflict in the group (Newstrom 2007). CONCLUSION It can be assumed that, groups have both positive and negative effect on the individual, and for the individual, being a member of a group can be rewarding as well as challenging as working alone. Working alone as an individual might lead to a quick decision making but working in a group can lead to a more effective decision making, because it is a group of people with different ideas, perception, attributes and behavior coming together to form the group (Rollinson 2001), also the individual can also learn from the other members of the group. However, it is believed that there is no ideal individual for a particular job, that no individual can have all the necessary qualities needed for a job but a group of individuals can, and when they come together with their different qualities it can lead to a successful decision making (Antony Jay, cited by Mullins 2002).
